The BIS was originally associated with anxiety, but now it is understood to have three functions, one of which has nothing to do with sensing danger, but with simply attending to what’s going on, including making the best of opportunities. As you know, this is something I have always argued about HSPs and have demonstrated with my own research that unless HSPs have had many bad experiences, so that they see danger everywhere, they are no more prone to anxiety than those with a less active BIS. It wants to send us out into the world immediately to get what we want or simply to explore. Those with a strong BAS are naturally more curious, eager to “go for it. When it was first studied, the high sensation or novelty seeking aspect was confused with impulsivity and high risk taking. A desire for anything, including anything new, will always be a factor in how much one is willing to risk, even an HSP. The revised High Sensation Seeking Test is below. This test is not backed up by as much research as the HSP test, but will give you a rough idea of your HSS tendencies.

Aron, PhD is one of the leading writers and researchers on the personality trait of high sensitivity sensory processing sensitivity and how it affects us as highly sensitive people or HSPs. I can cry at the drop of a hat. I cry all the time. It was a strong finding in our research.
There are those of us who are naturally sensitive, but many other people are also becoming that way as they do personal growth work and expand their awareness. There can be enormous benefits to being an HSP, but unfortunately, most sensitive people struggle with the challenges of this experience all their lives. It can be incredibly difficult to walk through the world in this way. This is not a flaw at all. We think things through more, which is our great asset. But no one would do that if they did not feel something about the thing they were pondering, so to think more we need to feel more. Plus, the more you think about something, the more your feelings about it can increase. Fortunately, we feel more good feelings as well as bad ones. We notice more subtle reasons to be happy, such as beauty or another’s kindness.

For this reason it is imperative to work out what energy is good for us, what is not so good and how we can deal with these energy fields that surround us. Being highly sensitive to energy levels can be a blessed curse. It can be exquisitely beautiful experiencing life on a high vibrational level and it is also beneficial to be able to read situations without the need for words, however, it can also be extremely exhausting, debilitating and can cause emotional and psychological distress.
For these reasons, it is essential to take good care of ourselves and protect our energy field so that we do not become emotionally drained and burned out. It is important to remember that we can choose what energy we absorb. Although there is negative and toxic energy in our environment and surrounding other people, it is up to us whether we allow it to have an influence on our own energy field. Rather than becoming affected by energies that drain us, we can make a conscious effort to avoid and protect ourselves from them by raising our vibration so that we attract and submerge in positive energies instead.
